Looking at the novel on its own, it isnt complete, but it stands up well enough if you like that extreme cliffhanger/ vertical limit kind of ending. It doesnt move that smoothly but its strong enough to have you going with it. I read it all within two days and as far as modern fiction goes, I wasnt disappointed, because Ive read some books in a Trilogy that make you hesitant to read the next one.
It had potential to be more though. I have not read the third one as yet, but i hope Jones realises what she has here. To me, she spent a little too much time on Raif, whos not the most interesting character in the book. We needed a little more of Dun Dhoone, a little less Raina, just a little less Effie in the woods and much less Raif and the maimed men. And not such an abrupt end to Tanjo. i think Jones biggest problem is going a little over the top with things like Tanjos death, the mauled dogs...
