Michael Whelan

Michael Whelan is undoubtedly one of finest cover artists there is, 14 Hugo World Science Fiction and 3 Howard World Fantasy Awards should should help support that statement. He has made covers not only for science fiction, fantasy and horror books, but also album covers.

He graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in painting as a President's Scholar. He studied later at Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles.

Whelan's carrier jump started as he won first place for professional science fiction art for his painting "Outbound" at the World Science Fiction Convention in 1974. Not long after this he started making covers for DAW and Ace books.
